On The Right Lead April 2025

It’s shedding season! It doesn’t matter if you rope with the best of them, or perform a passage, or handle a four-in-hand –  We’ll bet you have horse hair on your clothes!

Spring is a busy season as we prepare for the coming riding season. Along with the grooming, it is a good time to schedule farrier and vet visits, evaluate body condition and watch for problems such as laminitis and rain rot. The rapidly changing pasture conditions can put horses in danger of becoming obese very quickly and both your veterinarian and your farrier can help avoid serious problems. The warmer days will also bring out pests – flies and mosquitos – both which can carry disease and bacteria. Be ready with appropriate repellents and have your horse vaccinated against pest-borne diseases. If your horse has been relaxing all winter, plan a slow and steady return to work, to avoid injuries. Don’t forget to check your tack, equipment and your truck and trailer, assuring everything is safe and ready for those wonderful rides!

Trivia Contest

Trivia –

The March question was, how many months do we usually have to wait for our broodmare to foal? Yes, we know “It feels like Forever!” was one of the choices but our winner is Diane Parker with the correct answer of about 11 months.

This month we ask, the Lake County Horse Council is sponsoring what event on April 24th?
