Does your horse need a blanket? There are many arguments, pro and con, about blanketing horses at all. In our mild climate in California, most horses do fine without a blanket as long as they have access to shelter or windbreaks and adequate nutrition. Horses naturally put on a thick winter coat which is quite effective. Deciding to blanket your horse is usually based on specific conditions, such as keeping a show coat through the winter, or keeping a horse that you are riding regularly somewhat clean. Older horses and those who have trouble maintaining their weight often benefit from a blanket, so that they are not spending a lot of energy just staying warm instead of maintaining a good weight.
When choosing a blanket, consider factors such as material, weight, insulation and fit. There are many styles and designs to choose from, so a good place to start is measuring your horse for the correct size. There’s a blanket to fit your Percheron, or your Mini! another consideration is the type of blanket – waterproof, or a stable blanket. As the names imply, stable blankets are generally not waterproof and are designed to be worn indoors. If your horse is going to wear the blanket outside, even when it is not raining, then a waterproof blanket is a better choice. Horses like to roll and lay down on the ground and a stable blanket will absorb moisture. Leaving a heavy blanket on the horse when the day warms up can cause them to sweat, making the blanket damp inside. A damp blanket will make your horse chillier than no blanket at all.

We hear a lot about Prebiotics and Probiotics in relation to our horses’ digestive health. Probiotics are live bacteria that, in the right amounts, are part of efficient digestion. Many factors can affect this; exercise, stall life, competition, age and general metabolism. If you are considering a Probiotic for your horse, check out the new Purina MQ Systemiq™ Probiotic. This daily pelleted supplement included live and active bacteria, and scientific research to back it up. Results may be seen within 10-14 days of first feeding, and helps the horse maintain a healthy gut.
And, until January 1, 2025, save 50% on the 2# tub of Systemiq™ Probiotic – a 30 day supply – only at Rainbow Ag!
