What’s Up with All the Shedding? Let’s Talk Fur Facts!

Noticed your pet leaving little tufts of fur everywhere—from the couch to the car to your favorite hoodie? Yep, it’s shedding season! And here at Rainbow Ag, we’re here to help you understand why—and how to manage it.

Shedding is totally natural and happens year-round as part of your pet’s hair growth cycle. According to the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), this cycle has a few built-in stages:

  • Anagen: The growth phase—fur is growing in full force.
  • Catagen: A quick transition—growth slows down and prepares to pause.
  • Telogen: The resting phase—hair just hangs out until it’s ready to fall out.
  • Exogen: (Bonus round!) This is the active shedding phase, when hair says its final goodbye.

How long each phase lasts depends on your pet’s breed, health, and even the season—which is Springtime here in Lake and Mendocino Counties!

For example, poodles and shih tzus can stay in the growth phase for years, which means more grooming, less shedding. Other breeds might grow and shed fur much more quickly, which can mean more fluff floating around your house. Even cats have different coats, and therefore different patterns of shedding. Maine Coon, Russian Blue and Ragdoll cats have denser coats and so are prone to heavier shedding.

But don’t worry—Rainbow Ag has everything you need to stay ahead of the shed. From deshedding tools and shampoos to supplements for skin and coat health, our team can help you find the right products for your pet.

Swing by your local Rainbow Ag and let us help you keep your furry friend happy, healthy—and a little less hairy!
