As the Fall weather finally gets here, we all want to get out and enjoy it! But, just like any other time of the year, Autumn has its dangers for cats and dogs. Preparing for potential hazards can make enjoying the cozy season better.
- Rodenticides and Poison – As rodents seek shelter in houses and barns, “rat bait” is often used, and of course is terribly toxic for pets. Another common Fall toxin in antifreeze, which tastes sweet and is attractive to pets. Just one tablespoon of antifreeze can be fatal!
- Autumn brings falling leaves, but also fallen fruit, nuts and mushrooms. All can be unhealthy for our pets, so keep your outdoor spaces where pets have access clear of these hazards.
- Halloween is a fun holiday but can be dangerous for pets. Most candy, including chocolate and ones that contain the artificial sweetener xylitol, are toxic to pets. Decorations can also be choking hazards or cause intestinal blockage if chewed. If you plan to dress your pet in a costume, be sure it fits correctly, so it is easy for them to move and breath.
- Walks turn dark and dangerous! Evening or early morning walks make it important to prioritize visibility. Early sunset, cloudy skies or rain can make it difficult for motorists to see you and your pet. Use reflective collars, leashes or vests, or get a flashing LED light to clip on your pet’s collar. Wear light-colored clothing yourself and bring a flashlight or head-lamp.
- Watch out for wildlife. Raccoons, coyotes, foxes and other critters are active and often come around in the fall. Watch your pet closely when they are outside and don’t leave pet food out overnight, which attracts the wildlife.
- Stay warm and cozy. While some pets have thick fur and stay warm on their own, many benefit from a coat or boots to protect them from rain, snow and ice. Make sure the clothing fits correctly.
- An often-overlooked hazard – closed up swimming pools! A closed pool can still be a danger to pets, even those who swim well. Unsuspecting pets might venture onto pool covers, which can lead to accidents and even drowning. To prevent these tragedies, secure your pool area and make sure your pet doesn’t have unsupervised access.
Save the date! We know it’s only October, but it’s never too early to mark your calendars for SNAP’s (Spay Neuter Assistance Program) annual fundraiser, Pet Photos with Santa!
