On The Right Lead September 2025

Let the fuzz begin! As the days get shorter, horses start putting on their winter coats even though the weather is still hot. Much like us, heading out in the morning wearing a sweatshirt only to be too hot by afternoon, only the horse can’t take his off! Be extra careful on warm days, as horses can overheat then become too cool in the evening if their hair is still damp. Make sure your horses have plenty of salt or electrolytes, and cool, clean water available.

For those cool mornings, make sure you have a cozy new sweatshirt too! Students waiting for the bus, or you heading out to feed, will appreciate an Ariat or Carhartt sweatshirt! Back to School fashions are in the Rainbow clothing departments, now!

Fall can bring other health concerns for our horses too. In our part of the country, this is the season for bot flies, that lay their yellow eggs on the longer hairs of horses’ jaws, legs and chest. Horses ingest these eggs which then become the larval stage of the bot fly. Bots are extremely damaging to a horse’s gut. Heavy infestations can even perforate the lining of the intestines! Bots can be controlled with a  dose of  dewormer that specifically targets bots, such as Ivermectin.

A follow-up to our August Newsletter about the horse camps!

A reader sent along a message about another great Horse Camp near the coast at Russian Gulch State Park. She shares that it is a nice campground that gets little use because no one knows about it! There are 4 horse campsites, and miles of trails through the wooded  canyon. Check it out here, and thank you, Melody, for the tip!
