Halloween is fun, but there are also dangers to watch for. If your pet is nervous about strangers or tends to bolt out the door, make sure they are secured in a safe place away from the frightening parade of visitors. Many treats such as chocolate, raisins and xylitol (a common sugar substitute found in sugar-free candies and gum) are toxic to dogs and cats. Also be aware of decorations – candle-lit Jack O’Lanterns can tip and start a fire, light cords and wires can be chewed, and for the safety of birds and wildlife, don’t use fake spider webs outdoors. Having both cats and dogs microchipped will improve the chances of finding them, should they slip out a door while you are distracted. A fun and safe Halloween includes every member of the family!
