As the crisp air and colorful leaves signal the arrival of fall, it’s the perfect time to rethink your pet care routine. The change in seasons brings different needs for your furry friends, from health considerations to comfort and safety.

One of the biggest fall concerns is temperature changes. As nights grow cooler, make sure your pets have a warm, cozy place to sleep. Outdoor pets especially need extra bedding or shelter to stay safe in chilly weather. If you enjoy autumn walks, remember that pets can still overheat during midday sun, so keep walks in the cooler parts of the day.

Fall also marks the start of seasonal allergens and pests. Falling leaves can hide mold or ticks, and fleas remain active in cooler weather. Regular grooming and thorough checks after outdoor play help prevent irritation and infestations.

Another tip is to watch out for festive hazards. Halloween treats like chocolate, raisins, and sugar-free candy can be toxic for pets. Even decorative items such as candles or corn stalks can pose risks if chewed or knocked over.

By staying mindful of these seasonal factors, you can ensure your pet enjoys the beauty of fall just as much as you do—all while staying healthy and safe.

Fall Pet Safety Tips

  • Leaf Litter & Acorns
Leaf piles can hide fleas, ticks, and even snakes, making playtime risky. Acorns are also dangerous if eaten and can cause stomach issues or poisoning. Keep pets away from leaf litter and rake your yard often.
  • Poisonous Mushrooms
Wild mushrooms pop up in damp fall weather and many are highly toxic to pets. Because they’re hard to identify, it’s safest to remove any you see and keep your pets from sniffing or nibbling them.
  • Antifreeze & Rodenticides
This is the time of year that folks change their engine coolant. Antifreeze is attractive but deadly to pets if licked. Rodent baits placed around homes and fences can also be tempting. Always leash and supervise your pet and steer clear of treated areas.
  • Less Daylight
With later sunrises and earlier sunsets, you’ll often walk in dim light. Carry a flashlight, use reflective gear on collars or harnesses, and stay on well-lit paths. Be alert for nocturnal wildlife like skunks or snakes.

The leaves are turning color and then… they will fall! Fall is notorious for outdoor chores – cutting firewood, pruning, dealing with all those leaves and preparing our properties for the coming rainy season. If you’re faced with a long list of fall chores, check out the Rainbow Outdoor Power Equipment Department for some handy help. From cleaning gutters to felling trees, there’s a tool from Milwaukee, Stihl, Husqvarna, and more that will make short work of that long list.

Right now there’s a great deal on a Stihl Chain Saw – the T540XP16 $200 Off! Reg $779.99, on sale for $579.99.

Finish up the firewood with a premium Oregon Log Splitter – Close out sale!
