Safety tips for pets on Halloween
Halloween is the second-most common day for pets to go missing (after July Fourth.) Not every pet enjoys costumes or the activities on Halloween – so have a plan to keep your pets safe and relaxed. Strangers knocking on your door -- not to mention the scary costumes! – can make your dogs and cats nervous. Have a room set up at a quiet end of the house with their bed where they can chill. If you plan to have your pet in costume, test it out ahead of time, and be sure that the costume doesn’t block vision or restrict movement. Keep an eye on that candy bowl too! Make sure the treats are somewhere out of reach of curious pets. Some decorations can be dangerous too. Use electric candles instead of real flames, and be aware that fake spider webs can snare both your pets, and wildlife such as birds and small animals. Preparing in advance can make Halloween fun for everyone, including a pet that doesn’t really want to participate!

Mendocino County Kennel Club is holding a Farm Dog Certified Test, on November 7, from 1pm to 5 pm. Open to all breeds, the FDC test evaluates your dog through 12 exercises designed to reflect real farm environments. These include safely working near livestock (always securely penned), jumping on and remaining steady atop hay or straw bales, navigating unusual terrain, and stepping or jumping over logs. There is no herding involved. Instead, the test focuses on your dog’s ability to demonstrate self-control, confidence, and trust in you or his handler—key traits of a capable farm dog.
For more information, to participate or volunteer, contact Cheri at (707) 671-5796. To learn more about the Farm Dog Certified test, visit:

And, don't miss the Halloween Costume Fit Walk, leaving from the Skelly Dog Training Studio at 4 PM on Sunday, October 25. There's a Fit Walk on the last Sunday of every month. Get out and socialize, both you and your dog!
