On The Right Lead February 2026

February is Pet Dental Health Month, and that includes our big pets – the horses!
While most of us are aware that horses need regular dental care, did you know that dental pain can also be exhibited in behavior? A recent study published in the Journal of Veterinary Science established a link between common equine behavior problems and abscessed cheek teeth. Infections or abscessed teeth are common in horses but research has determined that half of all cases of infection are diagnosed during a routine dental exam, meaning that horse owners are unaware of the signs of dental pain induced behavioral patterns. Dental Health Month is the perfect time to schedule a dental examination to ensure your horse’s health and wellness.
Behavioral Problems Linked to Tooth Pain
Common signs of cheek tooth abscesses include:

- Evades the bit, resists bridling

The Neigh Savers Foundation Sanctuary in Potter Valley has been working hard to improve their 75 acre facility. In the last few years, this non-profit organization dedicated to the well-being of the horse, has built fences, rehabbed the barn, rebuilt the arena and added a 10 stall mare motel. The horses live a natural life – in a pasture, among a herd, and most are in their late 20’s and early 30’s! While the sanctuary has both pasture and a hay field where they raise their own hay, the horses are supported by charitable donation from the community. Now, it’s easy to make a contribution to Neigh Savers – you can donate directly into their account at Rainbow Ag! Just tell your cashier and your donation goes directly in the Neigh Saver’s account, to purchase feed, supplements, and supplies.
