On The Right Lead July 2026

Happy Independence Day!

Whether you are galloping down a beach, roping in the rodeo arena, or camped out in the forest, here’s wishing you a fun, safe and enjoyable Fourth of July!

Make your celebration a fun and safe one for everyone, including your horses, dogs and other critters. Depending on your situation, be aware that loud fireworks can startle and frighten many animals. While some horses will graze right through the local booms, others might become agitated or panicked. It’s a good idea to do a safety check of your pastures, barns and stables to be sure that all gates are securely closed, and that sharp or protruding objects are removed from stalls and pastures. If you think your horse would benefit from some calming medication, call your vet now! Check your horses regularly throughout the evening or stay with them to keep them calm. Don’t forget to stay calm and relaxed yourself – your horse is more likely to stay calm if you are. While fires from fireworks are actually rare, it is a good idea to plan for the worst-case scenario. As we go into Wildfire season, now is the time to make an evacuation plan, put tags with your name and phone number on halters, and make sure your barn is equipped with fire extinguishers and water.

One of the most important rules of Wildfire Evacuation for large animals is to leave early! Load up and go, so you are not on the road with a trailer when the general evacuation order is given. This allows room for firefighting and emergency teams to do their important jobs.
