There's a few events coming up that are sure to be a lot of fun. First up is the Potter Valley Spring Festival and Rodeo on Memorial Day weekend, May 22nd through 25th. Festivities will kick off on Saturday morning with the rodeo parade down Main Street in Potter Valley. Saturday afternoon, enjoy the Potter Valley Volunteer Fireman's barbecue, woodcutting and axe throwing contests, and afternoon junior rodeo. Special events this year include mutton busting for kids, mini bull riding, and mini bucking horses. Saturday night is the Starlite dance and Ranch Bronc and Bull Riding Chute-Out. Sunday afternoon, the California Cowboys Professional Rodeo Association will bring in some of the top rodeo competitors from all over the West. It'll be a great time to come cheer on our local favorites along with top rodeo contestants. Rodeo tickets are available from any of the queen

Willits Horsemen Association will be holding a Playday, BBQ and Rodeo June 6 & 7, 2026 at the Willits Horsemen’s Association Arena, 901 Hearst Road, Willits. Saturday is Gymkhana, and Sunday is the BBQ and Rodeo.

If you travel out of state with your horses, you are probably familiar with getting an annual Coggins test, but what actually is the Coggins test for? Coggins tests for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA), a bloodborne viral disease usually transmitted by biting insects such as flies. This annual test is the only way of knowing if your horse carries this deadly pathogen. While some horses exhibit symptoms such as fever and depression, many show no symptoms but still can transmit the disease. While transmission by biting flies is well documented, the disease has spread to areas of the country that did not used to have active cases. Unfortunately, veterinarians have determined that the disease is now most often spread by iatrogenic transmission, which means it is transmitted by humans. This can be from reusing needles when giving vaccinations, or not sterilizing veterinary equipment such as dental equipment or tubes used for worming. It is important to understand how EIA is transmitted and to test your horses annually. EIA is deadly, as there is no treatment or vaccination, and horses who test positive are usually euthanized or must live the rest of their lives in quarantine.
