The Willits Frontier Days folks know how to put on a rodeo — and they should, they have been doing it for 100 years! Willits Frontier Days is the longest continuously running rodeo in California, and this year starts off in mid-June with festivities that include horse shows, concerts, truck pulls, square dances, and a western art show. Special events include a horseshoe competition, a parade, a western BBQ, water fights, and the Lions Club cowboy breakfast. Of course, the main event is the rodeo! CCPR rodeo is going to happen on Friday, July 3rd, and Saturday, July 4th, making it a bang-up 4th of July celebration. Don’t miss all the happenings — check out their website for all the details and be involved with the longest continuously running rodeo in California, right here in Mendocino County.

NATRC, or the North American Trail Ride Conference, is the sanctioning body for competitive trail riding in North America. Competitive trail riding, unlike endurance races where the first to cross the finish line wins, is a judged event prioritizing the condition and soundness of the horse. It is not a race, but it is timed over a measured course where riders must navigate natural obstacles within a specific window. It’s a great way to get out with your horses and other horse folks and visit some scenic, beautiful areas of our country! On June 13th and 14th there will be a NATRC ride here in Potter Valley! Taking place at the historic Circle X Ranch, this ride is open for competitive riders on both Saturday and Sunday, or both, and also has a leisure division and novice division if you just want to get your feet wet. The ride has optional distances of 10, 20 and 30 miles over 1 or 2 days. New riders are always welcome! Check out all the information and other dates for NATRC events on their website https://natrcregion1.org/rideSched/rideSched.htm. There is also a good section for new rider information in case you're interested in learning more about the sport of competitive trail riding.

Local trainer and long-time NATRC participant Angie Meroshnekoff will be the manager for this ride, and she certainly has the experience. Angie and her horses have competed all over the United States, and she recently gave a presentation at the Region 1 mini convention where she explained her approach to traveling long distances safely with her horses. Trailering all over the United States, she has learned a thing or two about trailer safety. You can read a summary of her presentation here: https://natrcregion1.org/Articles/LongDistanceTrailering.pdf
