Rainbow Wags January 2026
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

January is National Walk Your Pet Month. While January, with short days and cold weather, might not seem like the perfect time to go outside and walk the dog, that is actually the point of having National Walk Your Pet Month now. The goal is to promote a healthy lifestyle for both you and your dog, at all times of the year.
Make the most of your walks by making it interesting! There is no reason to walk around the same loop every day. Vary your route and routine by adding in some fun activities such as play sessions, scent work, short training sessions and off-lead time. Look for opportunities to do new things, like jumping up on a stump or searching for treats hidden in a tree or bush. Go with friends and/or other dogs, or just sit on a bench and watch the world go by.
Consider your pet’s abilities and your own – leaping up on stumps or running might not be appropriate for a senior dog, and young puppies might need more often, but shorter, exercise periods. One way to make going out on a walk in January more enticing is to make sure both you and your dog are comfortable. Older dogs, or those with thin hair coats, might enjoy a cozy coat while outdoors. Get a rain-proof one for dogs who don’t like to get wet. If your walks take place after dark, invest in a reflective vest, collar or leash. Booties can keep paws warm and improve traction on ice or snow.
Make yourself comfortable too! Warm water-proof boots or shoes, gloves and a beanie cap, and a good rain coat can make splashing in puddles fun. Going out after dark? Don’t forget your headlamp! Check out the Rainbow Clothing Department for outerwear that will keep you smiling in the rain.
