Get ready for Mud!

Time to think about prepping our barnyards and horses for winter. Remember last year? That spot by the water trough where the mud was so deep it pulled your boot right off? Or that one horse’s hoof abscess that you were bandaging with duct tape and trash bags? Or when the feed delivery truck got stuck trying to back into your hay shed? There are things you can do now to avoid those situations!

Giving your horse a dry place to stand during wet weather makes a huge difference to hoof health. Now is the time to bring in a load or two of gravel and fill in the low spots near gates, stall doors and troughs. Installing stall mats or replacing worn and torn old ones is also a chore that is easier to do now, than when the yard is already muddy. If you use shavings, stock up! If your horse is barefoot, or you pull shoes for the winter, make an appointment with your farrier. It is easy to forget about hoof care when you are not riding as often, but winter is not the time to ghost your farrier! Preventative hoof care is money well spent.

If your horse’s feet could use some extra help, turn to the nutritional supplements recommended by top farriers. Trust Horseshoer’s Secret Pelleted Hoof Supplement to provide key nutrition to help support cracked hooves and weak hoof walls.

It’s cooler, maybe even raining! Does your horse still need electrolytes? The answer is Yes! Because we rely on dry forage (hay, pellets or hay cubes) and dry pastures this time of year, your horse may not be getting enough water. While grass has a naturally high water content, hay is typically less than 10%. During colder weather, horses must get nearly all of their water from drinking. But if they don’t drink the five gallons of water they need a day, the risk of impaction colics rises. It is a good idea to monitor your horses’ water consumption and act quickly if they are only sipping a bit.

Learn more about keeping your horse hydrated in this article from Farnam: Electrolytes Can Keep Your Horse Drinking During The Winter Months.

And you are in luck – Apple Elite Electrolyte Pellets are a Farnam Deal in October - $10.00 Off! A scoop in your horse’s feed every day helps keep the colic away!
